Pinewood Derby Workshop

We will have our 4th annual Pinewood Derby Workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:00 in the St. Therese Cafeteria. Brian L. will have his band saw available to make any cuts that you need. This is a great opportunity for those without access to power tools. We will also have additional cars for sale during the workshop.

These will primarily be profile cuts, so have the outline marked on the side of the car, and Brian will take care of the cutting.

This is also the fourth year that Brian has done this, and it's been a huge help to a lot of Scouts and their families over the years. Thanks so much for your help with this, Brian!

Also, we'd like to add an educational element to this as well - a bit of the science behind what makes a car go faster. If you have any ideas or are able to contribute, please let Eric know.

Scout Night at the Circus

Christmas Pack Meeting - Dec. 18

Our Christmas pack meeting will be held on December 18, at 4:00 in the St. Therese Cafeteria. Highlights will include games, awards, popcorn prizes (including Pinewood Derby cars), and the raffle for our grand prize. Each scout gets one chance for every $100 of popcorn he sold. We're also expecting a visit from someone special...

As is our tradition, we'll also have a gift exchange for the kids. If you'd like to participate, have your Scout bring a wrapped gift of about $5 in value. Siblings are welcome to join in - bring a present, get a present!

We also want to try something new this year - the first ever (that any of us know of) Pack 751 Chili Cook-off! For those who would like to participate, just bring your best chili and we'll taste them all. Just give us a heads-up so we know how hot it is! The pack will provide the bowls and spoons. If you don't have a recipe, don't feel obligated. But we were so impressed with the pot-luck in November, we wanted to give it a try.

Christmas Caroling on Dec. 15

This is still a work in progress, but it's been generally agreed that this is a fun idea. On Thursday, Dec. 15, we'll have the Scouts, in uniform, sing Christmas carols at a nursing home. I don't know where yet, and I don't have a time yet, but we need to start planning anyway!

Sunday Hike - Boone County Arboretum

Just a reminder that the Hiking Club is this Sunday. This month we'll check out the Boone County Arboretum. They have a wide variety of tree and plant species, so we should still have some interesting things to see, even this late in the year. Also, with rain in the forecast for the next couple of days, their paved trail should be very welcome!

We'll leave the St. Therese big parking lot at 1:30!! This is a little earlier than we usually leave, but we'll need a few extra minutes for the drive to Boone County. If you're running late, give me a call so we'll know to look for you when you get to the park.

It's obviously getting colder, but it's really not that bad. The best advice is to dress in layers. They can always take off a layer if they need to. Bring gloves and a hat, and don't forget water. Even though it isn't hot out, we still need to make sure we stay hydrated. If it rains, bring a poncho. If it's raining too hard, we'll reschedule. It was easy to say we hike year-round when we started this in June. Now is when we start to test it, although if the forecast is accurate the temperature should be in the low 50's!

Pack Meeting on Nov. 20

Our next pack meeting will be at 4:00 on Sunday, November 20, and we have a lot lined up...

we'll have the presentation of some awards, including Bobcat and Webelos ranks
we'll have the popcorn from the order forms ready to distribute
we'll have at least 4 different games for the kids to play
and we'd also like to try a pot-luck. Bring any dish that you'd like to share - chili dip, bbq weenies, meatballs, dessert, whatever you like. If it's unique, and you don't mind sharing, bring the recipe! But don't worry if you can't bring anything. We just want to give the parents something to do, and a way to get together.

And one last thing - we'd like to offer any support we can to the effort being led by the Boy Scout troop and the St. Vincent DePaul Society. They are currently taking up a collection for our fellow Kentuckians in Owsley County. They have the unfortunate distinction of being the third poorest county in America. When they aren't in school, some of the kids go the entire weekend without a meal. They're only a couple of hours south of us, but it's a completely different way of life. In addition to collecting canned goods and other non-perishable food items, the groups are also collecting any useful household items you would like to donate. Clothing, baby items, toiletries... the need is great. You can bring anything you would like to donate to the pack meeting, or we can make other arrangements. Anything you're able to give will be very much appreciated.

Hike on Sunday at Ault Park

This Sunday, the Hiking Club will explore Ault Park in Cincinnati. In addition to some great trails, there is also a beautiful overlook, a playground, and plenty of photo ops.

Turn In Popcorn Forms

We're finally wrapping up with the popcorn sale. If you haven't already, contact any relatives, friends, or neighbors who would like to support the Scouts. We need to have the forms turned in by Thursday, Oct. 27. There are a few ways to do that:
1) If your Scout attends St. Therese school, send them through the home folder to "Eric McIntosh, c/o Ethan McIntosh 5L",
2) You can drop off the form at the Convent at St. Therese on Thursday between 6:00 and 7:30, or
3) You can drop it off at my house in Southgate. I work from home, so just leave it between the front doors and I'll get it.

If for some reason one of those ways doesn't work for you, please let Eric know and we'll figure something out. It's important that we get them turned in on time so the order can be placed before the deadline. They won't accept late orders!

Be Prepared... for the zombie plague!

There is an awesome/educational comic from the CDC that uses a (hypothetical?) zombie attack to teach about emergency preparedness. There is even a checklist at the end to help make your own kit at home. Whether for zombies, or some more natural type of disaster, it's always best to Be Prepared.

Pack Meeting on Oct. 23

Our October pack meeting will feature a costume contest. To give everyone time to get their costumes ready, we're pushing the October meeting back to the 4th Sunday, Oct. 23 at 4:00 in the St. Therese Cafeteria. We'll have plenty of prizes to give out, including best costume.

We'll also have a Trunk-or-Treat in the parking lot. Families are asked to decorate their cars as spooky as they'd like, and bring some candy to pass out to the trick-or-treaters. There will also be prizes for the best car decoration!

Finally, we'll be having a T-shirt Design Contest for our next pack shirt! Any scout who brings his design to the pack meeting can have it put into the contest. We'll then vote for a favorite that will be made into our next t-shirt, ready for delivery by the November pack meeting. Suggestions for a winning design include a Scouting theme, and not too much clutter. Feel free to use art and images from the web. It doesn't have to be free-hand.

We'll take orders for the shirts after the design has been selected. Cost is expected to be between $10 - $15.

Religious Emblems for Cub Scouts

In addition to rank advancement and electives, there are many other awards and recognition available to Cub Scouts. From belt loops and pins, to conservation and emergency preparedness awards, there is always something to engage the boys and keep them busy. One award program that I want to highlight is the religious emblems program. These are not awards that are given by the BSA, but rather by the Scout's own faith community. Most of the world's major religions and denominations participate. The requirements are established by the church. The BSA's role is simply recognition of the achievement.

One unique aspect of this recognition is that it's one of only two awards that can be earned as a Cub Scout, but worn on the Boy Scout uniform. The other is the Arrow of Light. In fact, it can even be worn on the adult leader uniform when they grow up to become a Scout leader. So basically, my son is wearing a purple square knot that I'll never be able to wear!

Please see this LINK for more information, and let me know if you are interested in pursuing this with your Scout. There are different levels to match your Scout's age and rank. I can speak from experience with the Catholic emblem to tell you that it's a rewarding experience, and the presentation ceremony at the Cathedral with the bishop was beautifully done. They also had a recognition at a Mass at St. Therese. For those of other faiths, I have no doubt that similar ceremonies would be held. Different churches will have different schedules. Again from experience, the Catholic emblem would need to be completed by February to be included in the ceremony. I'd be glad to help you find out the schedule for any other faith.

Finally, this is a program that the Scout works on at home with the family. None of the requirements can or should be completed during a den meeting. If you have any other questions, or would like more information, please see your den leader or Cubmaster.

Pack Picnic on Sunday!

This meeting will be our family picnic. Bring the whole family for fun activities, and to meet the new Scouts. Please bring a 2-liter, and a side dish or dessert to share (just enough to feed your family). If your dish needs a serving spoon or spatula, please bring one along.

You can also bring an empty 2-liter bottle to use as a water rocket. If you haven't seen it yet, you'll love it!

Popcorn Sale at Kroger

The pack has received permission from Kroger to sell Popcorn at the Newport Pavilion store on 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, and 10/15. Please consider signing up for a time slot one one or more of those days. It probably sounds boring, but the kids end up having a great time, and usually are upset when it's time to leave! And what they don't realize is that they're developing great communication skills while they make their sales pitches.

Feel free to sign up for multiple slots. Your scout will received a share of all the popcorn that is sold on his shift, and that counts toward prizes! Contact your den leader with questions.

9/11 Memorial Hike

We usually hike on the first Sunday of the month, but this month that fell on Labor Day weekend. Instead, we will honor the 10-year anniversary of our country's loss on 9/11 with a Memorial Hike. We'll meet in the St. Therese big parking lot at 1:45pm on Sunday, Sept. 11, and head down to the riverfront for a version of the BSA's official Dan Beard hike. We'll have the Scouts, in uniform, carrying small flags along the way, past Fountain Square, the Marine Memorial at Lytle Park, Sawyer Point, and the Dan Beard House.

I think the sight of Scouts in uniform on a day like that will be a reassuring thing to see. The hike will be about 5 miles long, which is not as long as it sounds. We've been out with Tigers on hilly terrain for hikes that long before, and they're bummed when we have to stop! We'll take a break along the way for a snack, maybe at Graeter's on the Square if everyone is interested. Our only problem will be competing with the Bengals game for parking spaces, but we'll manage that with carpooling. Also, the Scouts will earn the 5-mile Dan Beard Hike patch, in addition to recognition from the Pack.

Once-in-a-lifetime Scouting Opportunity

I'm not exaggerating. The Webelos II's are being invited to join the Boy Scouts at their Fall Camporee (info HERE). This would be fun under normal circumstances, but this year is extra special. The Scouts will be hiking the Old Bison Trail. The trail runs from Camp Michaels to Big Bone Lick State Park (10 miles). This trail has been closed for many years, and will be closed again after the Camporee. Also, anyone who participates is eligible to order a commemorative medal for $6.35. You can see the medal HERE. Sorry that I don't know the full history, but this was a medal that was available many, many years ago. The original mold was lost, but they've had one created to make a very limited run.

You don't have to commit now, but talk to your Scout and see if he would be interested. The Camporee is Oct. 21 - 23, but the medals must be ordered by early August. I just heard about it this afternoon, but Ethan and I already decided that we're in.

Also, this will give the Webelos a chance to camp with a Troop, which is required for their Arrow of Light. I really hope to see them all earn that!

For those who are interested, here is the address with directions for the Flag Placement Ceremony for the Veterans' graves. A brief training for the boys starts on Saturday morning at 9:00am, so plan to arrive at about 8:45. Scouts should be in uniform if possible.

Pack 751 Hiking Club

Welcome to the

Pack 751 Hiking Club

Why did your son want to join Scouting? He wanted to do out-of-doors stuff - hike, camp, and explore nature. To that end, Pack 751 has started a “Hiking Club”. Beginning June 2011, the pack will hike monthly, year- round.

On his first hike, the Scout earns a “Miles Hiked” patch. After that, miles are tracked, and the Scout earns “segments” for each 10 miles that he hikes.

The Scout will also earn a hiking stick along the way. The stick will be awarded after the Scout reaches the 25-mile mark. Very soon, it will be the exception for a Scout not to have received his hiking stick, and by the time they finish Webelos most of the Scouts who start in the beginning ranks will have more than 100 miles! A determined Scout will likely cross-over to Boy Scouts with more than 200 miles!

We recommend that not only Scouts earn a hiking stick, but also their parents, guardians, and siblings. If they choose, the pack will record their miles hiked, too. However, until a younger boy becomes a Scout, miles hiked don’t count toward the Hiking Club. Also, any non-Scouts will be responsible for the costs of their awards. While the pack encourages families to hike as often as they can, recognition and mile-tracking will only include pack-sponsored hikes.

GETTING STARTED

Hiking Coordinator: We will need one of the parents to volunteer as the Pack “Hiking Coordinator”. This individual scheduling the hikes and tracking miles.

Hike lengths will typically range 3 – 7 miles. Tigers have no problem with 3 – 4 mile hikes. We just ensure that the parent-guardian brings plenty of water along, and a few snacks (for both of them).

On longer hikes we will typically eat lunch on the trail (practicing “Leave No Trace” at all times). Scouts will carry water bottles and may use day packs (or their parent-guardian acts as the beast of burden). On warmer weather hikes, a small water bottle is not enough for even the smallest Scout.

During winter, prior to departure, we will need to double-check the dress of the Scouts (particularly newer Scouts) to ensure they are properly prepared. If not, we will need to wait for them to go and pick up the forgotten, hat, gloves, mittens, coat, boots, etc.

On all hikes, an adult leader will be assigned to the “tail” position. No one is allowed behind this individual. The Pack hikes as a unit. We start together, break together, etc., with everyone following the same trail. We may allow an older Scout to “Lead”. We will usually work in map reading with them, where we have a route we want to take on the map. It’s up to the Scout to sort out to sort out the forks, etc., in the trail. However, they will have their parent-guardian with them also. We will also introduce the Scouts to geocaching, which involves using a GPS to locate hidden caches in the woods.

Benefits:

1) Very outdoor-oriented (Council surveys have indicated that one of the key items our Scouts want is more camping and outdoor activities).

2) Helps ready Scout for Boy Scouts. By their Webelos year, they are very comfortable in outdoor situations.

3) Recruitment. The hiking stick is a very positive incentive for new Scouts.

4) Increases participation in the Pack. Scouts look forward to earning their hiking stick, feathers, etc.

5) Miles transfer to Boy Scouts.

6) Easy to reinforce buddy system along trail, walks to outhouse, etc.

7) Numerous opportunities to draw in Scouting requirements and lessons.

Challenges to Running:

Pinewood Derby Workshop

The pack will host a Pinewood Derby workshop in the St. Therese Undercroft on Thursday, January 20 from 6:00 - 7:30.

This is a great opportunity for those without access to power tools. (Or those who are no longer allowed near them...) We will also have additional cars for sale during the workshop.

These will primarily be profile cuts, so have the outline marked on the side of the car, and Brian will take care of the cutting.

The pack have some kits left.

At the December Pack 751 meeting, we handed out car kits to the boys that sold popcorn. If you missed the meeting and you sold popcorn, your den leader will have your prizes from the sale, and your car kits.

If you did not receive one at the meeting, there is no reason to despair. You can still get one and race in the pack races in February. Also, as usual, we did buy extra kits for anyone who would like to buy one at cost - $4. This saves you form trekking up to the scout shop in Evendale, or paying shipping from scoutstuff.org.

As you all know, the races are for the kids. The idea is that they work on their own car so they have a sense of accomplishment and pride in their own car.

So since the boys will be doing their own cars, what are the parents, siblings, and others to do? Build a car for themselves of course. We will be having open-division races that same day for anyone who wants to build their own car. We will follow the same guidelines as the boys, and have just as much fun. Also, it can be a chance to race parent/brother/sister vs scout.

If you want one or more kits from the pack supply, please contact me your den leader.

Pack Christmas Party This Sunday

We'll have our pack Christmas party this Sunday at 2:00 in the St. Therese Cafeteria.

Please have your Scout bring a wrapped present for the gift exchange. The gift should be no more than $5 in value.

Also, if you'd like to donate a non-perishable food item, we'll be collecting them at the meeting to give to the St. Vincent dePaul Society. They can also accept paper towels, toilet paper, etc. Aside from being a Good Turn, this also helps some Scouts meet certain electives.

And we're expecting a visit from Santa during the meeting, so have your cameras and wish lists ready! As always, the whole family is welcome to join us! Hope to see you there.

P.S. - Please note that the meeting is in the Cafeteria, not the Undercroft!!

Second, be sure to note the drop-down menu for the full list of Council and District events. For your reference, we are the Trailblazer District.

Both the Spook-o-ree and the BB & Archery Academy require registration. BB Academy fills up every year, so if you know you want to go, don't wait to sign up! The boys will be able to earn their BB belt loop and their Archery belt loop that day. The only other opportunity to earn those awards is at Twilight Camp!

Bowling Party!

This Sunday at 3:00, Pack 751 will be bowling at Walt's Center Lanes in Newport. Each family will pay for their own bowling, but they've arranged special pricing for our group that day - shoe rental and two games for $5.00 per bowler. It's usually $3.50 per game on Sundays, so this is a good deal!

As with all pack meetings, parents, siblings, and extended family are welcome to join us. Please RSVP by Thursday, August 19 if you are able to join us. If your plans change later and you're able to join us after all, you can certainly still come. But Walt's has asked that we give them an approximate number prior to coming.

They will have bumpers up for the kids, as well as a few regular lanes for any adults who wish to bowl. This will be our third consecutive year at Walt's, and it's always a welcome break from the August heat. Hope to see you there!

Dan Beard Council to get new home

This isn't news to many Scouters, but the Enquirer reported today on the Council's plans to move their headquarters to Evendale. The plans look great, but it will mean a longer drive to get to the Scout Shop for uniforms and other supplies. You can read the article HERE. Excerpt:

The Scout Achievement Center, according to the submitted design plan, will house a variety of spaces, including a 3,000-square foot multi-purpose room with seating for 200, a “Tree House,” and a scouting retail store.

Village officials decided to lease the property to the Boy Scouts because they believe they will be a good neighbor to the neighboring 99-acre Gorman Heritage Farm, a working educational farm.

Twilight Camp - Day Five - Family Night!

The last day of camp is Family Night! The boys get to bring their families to camp and show them all they've done and worked on all week. And boy are they proud! Speaking for my own family, we hiked the trail, and ate pizza and hot dogs (and WAY too many desserts!). We got to see an incredible demonstration from the police K-9 unit, then hiked down to the Archery range to let his little brother and big sister get in on the fun. On our way out we stopped by the Raingutter Regatta and had a great time trying to get the boats to sail straight.

Each of the boys received a certificate for earning their BB Gun and Archery Belt Loops. Also during camp, they earned their Fishing and Volleyball belt loops. And there are other awards that they began work on including the Outdoor Activity Award and the Leave No Trace Award.

This was a GREAT week of camp. The boys had a great time, they learned a lot, and had an experience that I'm sure they'll remember when they're my age! It was an honor to be a part of it.

Twilight Camp - Day Four - Wolves

HIKE NIGHT!! Thursday night was hike night, and the boys had a blast! They visited different stations as they hiked along the trail, learning about all sorts of things. We stared off at National Birds. They learned about different kinds of birds, and how to tell them apart. Signs to look for include color and size, as well as where they nest and feed. From birds, we moved on to Hiking Fundamentals. The boys talked about the necessary things to take on a hike, and the importance of planning ahead. After that, we made "pine cone bird feeders". Pretty simple - just smear peanut butter and shortening onto a pine cone, place into a paper bag with bird seed in it, and shake without mercy!

Then it was on to the Grow Something station. The boys learned about what a plant needs to grow, and how they return oxygen to the air. Then they got to decorate a cup, and add soil and seed. After all of that, we were ready for dinner! We moved on to the Chuck Wagon, learned a little about healthy eating and the Food Pyramid, then they cooked their own hot dogs over an open fire. And then they did it again for seconds! And what would a Cub Scout fire be without Smores?!?

With bellys full, we hiked back up the loonnngg hill to learn about the concept of Leave No Trace. The boys learned the six basic rules of LNT, why they matter, and then worked together to make a poster explaining the concept. Then it was on to the Leaf Hunt. They learned about different types of leaves - mainly simple vs. compound - and found examples of each. Finally, we wrapped up our hike with Poisonous Plants! We learned how to identify Poisons Ivy, Oak, and Sumac, and what it is that makes them "poisonous". And then we learned how to combat the effects of those plants with another - Jewelweed.

As always, we wrapped up our evening with a Flag Ceremony. I had two of the Cubs in the car on the way home and asked them what their favorite thing had been at camp all week. Both said the hike! Lots to learn, and they paid great attention. We have some fine outdoorsmen in the making!

Twilight Camp - Day Three - Wolves

Our third night was a little lower-key than the others. Not as long of a distance between stations, and more crafts than the other nights. We started the evening under the shelters after lightning was spotted. We finally went to our flags at 5:45 to get started. We were able to make up the time by shaving about 5 minutes from each of the stations, which wasn't a problem at any of them for us.

We started off at Sports Equipment where the boys laced together their own "sports-ball pillows". From there it was back to the fishing hole, where we had another catch in our group! After that it was on to the Knots station. The boys learned to tie a shoelace knot, a square (or reef) know, and we made a valiant attempt at a bowline.

After that it was time to learn about Tools. Some of the boys thought they already knew them all, but soon found out that there's a big wide world of tools out there! They practiced handing tools back and forth safely, and even practiced hammering nails. Which immediately came in handy at our next station - Woodworking. We went back to finish their birdhouses, which came out very well! The boys all did a great job on them.

Next it was on to the Raingutter Regatta. To save time, we didn't build our boats on sight. They each received a kit with an explanation of how to build it at home. Then we got down to the business of sailboat racing! The boys took turns racing some boats that had already been made. One rose to the top as the fastest, so the boys took turns using it to race against the clock!

Finally, we wrapped up on Metal Rubbings. The Scouts could make a foil imprint of either the Statue of Liberty, or the Liberty Bell. They were pretty wound up by then, which made it all the more fun. Did you know you can make a metal rubbing with your butt? They found out that you can!

Another fun day of Twilight Camp. This is a great group of Scouts - they have fun, they get along, and they're learning a ton. Tomorrow, we start an hour early for hike night! We're all excited!

Twilight Camp - Day Two - Wolves

Another great day at Camp!! The boys began the day with and Olympic-style march into the flag area. The flag was again raised at half-staff in honor of the fallen Scouts in Iowa. Our first station of the day was Leather. The boys made "medals" from leather, each stamping his circle with his initials and other symbols. Many of course opted for Wolves! From there we went to the woodworking station to begin our project. I won't ruin the surprise, but we'll wrap it up tomorrow. From there it was on to the discovery of the sport of Ultimate (the sport formerly known as Ultimate Frisbee until it was realized that Frisbee is a registered trademark of the Wham-O Corporation). The boys all did a great job, in one case, even after a disc to the face! I'm proud to report that good sportsmanship was observed by all - not an easy thing to say when you're dealing with boys. After that it was on to Picture Frame area. All of the parents will be in for a nice surprise once these come home. It's amazing how many different designs these boys can come up with! There were only a few different pieces to work with, but all of the frames ended up completely different from the others.

After the frames, we were back in action on the Giant Slingshot. The boys used an over-sized sling shot to hurl "water bombs" to a set of Olympic rings (hula hoops on an elevated frame) about 30 yards away. The idea was to get the water bomb through one of the hoops, which happened a few times. But most of the boys were more interested in seeing just how far and/or high one of those things could go. We wrapped up the evening with another round of Archery and BB guns. All of the boys in our den earned a bulls-eye pin in both sports!! Some had shot before, others were shooting for the first time, but they all showed improvement. We were dismissed after closing ceremonies.

Once again, I was very impressed with the way the boys behaved at camp. I've been to several events where too many Cubs just run wild and forget the Core Values of Scouting. I haven't seen that at Twilight Camp. All of the Scouts, particularly those in den 204, have been on their best behavior. They're crazy and they have fun, but they never get out of control. I've been very impressed with them.

Twilight Camp - Day One - Wolves

What a great kickoff to Camp! The Wolves got off to a great start with Water Rockets. They each built their own, adding wings and a nose cone to a 2-Liter bottle, then launching it into the air with a little water and air. Then they moved on to the ranges, first Archery, then BB guns. All five Scouts in our group earned a Bullseye Pin! After that, they got into the patriotic spirit by learning about and singing the Star-Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. Next on the agenda was Fishing. One of the Scouts even caught one! A small one, but a fish nonetheless. Finally, we wrapped up with the Volleyball station. The boys quickly mastered serving, and we even had a few return shots. Not bad for some gonna-be-2nd-graders! We closed the evening as we had opened it - with a flag ceremony.

I was very impressed with the behavior of the boys. Five 8-year olds, and they were all very well behaved. They had a great time, but didn't get TOO carried away. After a good night's sleep, they'll all be ready for Day Two!

Memorial Day Parade

The Scouts of Pack 751 will be marching in the Southgate Memorial Day Parade. Here are the details from the city's website:

Assembly begins at 9:00 A.M. - Step off at 9:30 A. M.
Come join the fun or at least line the streets and watch the fire trucks and police cars and dignitaries on this special day. It all starts at the intersection of Bluegrass and Electric Avenues. The parade route is as follows:. right. on Walnut to Maple, left on Maple Street to Center Street to Walnut Street and back to Electric Avenue to the War Memorial Monument. The Veterans of Foreign Wars ceremony, Civic and Church group presentations and Taps will be played. For the young of heart, a short walk through the cemetery to view and pay special respect to those who paid the supreme sacrifice at any and all wars. A reception sponsored by the Southgate V.F.W. will follow the ceremony with free soft drinks, ice cream and cake.

Emergency Preparedness Award

All Cub Scouts are eligible to earn the Emergency Preparedness Award. There are different requirements that must be met to earn the award depending on the Scouts rank. Den Leaders and volunteers can also earn the award!

Click here to see the requirements for your Scout's rank. After he has completed the requirements, print and fill out the application. Your scout can give it to his den leader. Scouts can wear the pin centered on the left pocket of their uniform.

On April 15, the Switchback zip-off scout pants go on a 2-for-1 sale. That's $20/pair rather than $40 and they are suddenly a pretty good deal.

I've been wearing my Switchbacks to every scouting outing, meeting, and roundtable since August, 2006 and they are still working great. Now, this is a great opportunity for the troop to replace many of the blue jeans with green nylon. And, it's perfect timing for the crews going to Philmont.
